Kindergardening

I have been growing a vegetable garden for a few years now, and I like to use it as an opportunity to teach EVERYTHING come Spring.  I find students are more motivated when they have a tangible project, so our veggie garden touches on science, math, literacy, environmental responsibility, community involvement, health and nutrition, and (of course) art.

The neighbourhood that my school is in has a community garden that is run by
a retired gentleman who the children call "Dan the Garden Man".
Dan is one of my favourite people on Earth,
and his garden is the summertime home for our seedlings,
which we plant in his garden in May.

Henna

We had an arts day at my school called Arts Alive.  There were all different arts workshops for the kids to sign up for.  There was some henna leftover from the henna workshop, so obviously we brought it to the pub.

I think I need some practice.

Chocolate Chip Banana Peanut Butter Muffins

I used the banana butterscotch chip muffin recipe from Nigella Lawson's "Nigella Express" cookbook.  I replaced the butterscotch chips with chocolate, the sugar with cane sugar, and the white flour with a mixture of whole wheat and kamut flour and ground flax seeds.  Then I put a dollop of all-natuaral peanut butter in the centre of each one.  There was one day when I ate four in one sitting.

Recycled Sweater Hat

In February, I took a "making things from recycled sweaters" workshop at Nathalie-Roze & co. in Leslieville.  I made this hat and some matching armwarmers.  It's cashmere.  I promptly went out and bought many many sweaters, and now I am going to make many many things out of them!
